Charlie Chaplin’s Statue
For the man who made the movies speak in hearts of millions, Charlie spent many years in our midst as a welcome and humble guest and friend to many. The movie career of Charlie Chaplin began in 1913 and he had the longest most versatile career in the history of movies. His movies continue to be enjoyed by youngsters in age and mind to this day.
The Chaplin Family began visiting Waterville in 1961 and while they were always welcomed they were not intruded upon. Waterville has always felt honoured that the Chaplins chose it as a favoured holiday retreat. Charlie’s ability to make millions laugh through some of the most depressing times in history makes him one of the outstanding persons in world history.
In 1997 IRD Waterville Ltd, initiated the idea of honouring Charlie Chaplin and successfully applied for funding under EU Leader program. This funding together with the generosity of the Chaplin Family led to the erection of this magnificant statue which is a reminder of someone who was always gentle and unassuming on his visits here and came to be regarded as ’one of our own’
The sculpture was created by Valentia Sculptor Alan Ryan Hall and was unveiled in July 1998 and has been stopping traffic passing through Waterville ever since.
The statue is located on the sea side of the main street in Waterville |
