Golfing in South West Kerry is really all about Waterville which is a unique place for golf, with a choice of 2 courses to play on, it is heaven for the golfing enthusiast.
With the Waterville Golf Links, rated in the top 5 in Ireland and in the top 20 links courses in the world. Tiger Woods and his friends Mark O’Meara and the late Payne Stewart regularly visited this great course, prior to the British Open. Payne Stewart was President of the Club before his early death.
Golf at Waterville is a mystical experience the beauty of classic links land, surrounded by the sea, yet forever challenged and shaped by the elements. This course will require all the shots you can muster to conquer it. For further information visit the Waterville Golf Links Website.
On the other side of Waterville Village looking back over the town and Lough Currane is the new Skellig Bay Golf Course. Skellig Bay was designed by American Golf Architect Ron Kirby. Over the years Kirby has worked with many of the worlds great designers: Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones Snr and Gary Player. Ron regards Skellig Bay as his own creation and is very proud of this addition to the other great courses in the South-West of Ireland. Nestling in the shadows of the towering McGillicuddy Reeks, the golfer has to negotiate the river Fionnglass for the opening and closing holes but it is the stretch from six to sixteen that lives in memory long after the last putt has been sunk. Here the awesome beauty of the Bay hits you full in the face as you play through holes framed by over 8000 yards of ancient famine walls. Original standing stones from pre-christian times and a fairy fort all add to an unforgettable round as you experience an unbelievable feeling of another time and place. Skellig Bay is full of challenging golf holes, says Sunday Independent Golf Correspondent Dermot Gilleece. ...and is built in the traditional design that advocates visibilty, fairness and enjoyment. For more information go to the Skellig bay Golf Course. |
