Frank Donnelly Ghillie

Frank, your host, is a professional angling guide and boatman. We have our own boats with engines for hire which are moored on our private shoreline just 300 metres from the guesthouse with easy access by car. The Fishing Season opens 17th January through to 30th September during which we cater for anglers of all ages, with or without experience, including anglers with disabilities.

Salmon are in the lake throughout the season and are widely distributed, although popular lies are in bays and around rocky headlands

Trolling with 18-gram Lukkies, Toby´s and 11 and 13 cm Rapallas are successful early in the season but flies from sizes 6 to 12 on a floating line account for many fish throughout the year. There is a good run of Grilse from early May. Popular flies are: Thunder & Lightning, Silver Stoat, Black Doctor and Shrimp Flies.

Large trout enter the lake early season with the main run from early May onwards. They are widely distributed over the whole lake and caught during daylight hours, normally from a drifting boat. Approx 11 ft. rod is best using No. 6 or 7 floating or intermediate lines.

Popular flies are sizes 10-14, normally three to a cast, including: Claret Bumble, Green Peter, Mallard & Claret, Raymonde, Black Pennell, Watson´s Fancy, Bibio, Jungle Bunny, Connemara Black, Black Zulu, Red Arse Peter, Watson´s Bumble, Kingsmill and Soldier Palmer.

The Waterville System has a number of well-stocked lakes nearby: Loch Derriana, Loch Namona and Cloonaghlin Lake. We are also close to the Inny River and Cummeragh River. Fishing in all these can be arranged by us.

Saltwater fly fishing has become more popular in recent years, especially for Sea Bass from our local shoreline.
